080824-M-2322L-242
HELMAND PROVINCE, Delaram, Afghanistan – During a recent three-day trip that included stops in Italy, Sweden and Africa, Secretary of the Navy, The Honorable Mr. Donald C. Winter, traveled here to visit with service members of Task Force 2d Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, part of Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix.

During his visit, the SECNAV was flown to Forward Operating Base Delaram — one of the unit’s most remote FOBs, and taken to the site where a Medical Capabilities event was being hosted by Marines of 3rd Civil Affairs Group and Navy corpsmen assigned to the Battalion Aid Station. The task force provided medical care to more than 140 Afghan patients during the MEDCAP, which is one of various civil military operations projects coordinated to help improve the health of the local Afghan community.
Comprised of more than 1,200 Marines, sailors, soldiers, airmen, National Guardsmen and civilian contractors who specialize in police operations, the task force is conducting counterinsurgency operations with a focus on police training and mentoring within assigned boundaries in order to set the conditions for the successful integration and future assumption of authority by the Afghan National Police.
